Nat Coalson

Nathaniel Coalson

Nat Coalson (b. 1970) is a British-American photographic artist based in England and working internationally. Nat works primarily in abstract photography and photo-based mixed-media. His work has been published and exhibited widely, received numerous awards and is held in private and corporate collections worldwide.

Nat’s visual art is inspired by curiosity, exploration and discovery. The imagery is intended to investigate conscious perception and subjective response, thus inspiring imagination, encouraging contemplation and inviting individual interpretation. Many of the pictures are visual fictions, appearing to show things other than what they actually are. Nat’s art invites each viewer to recognise and examine their own personal reactions to visual stimuli.

Each photograph is created in-camera as much as possible, usually with only very minimal post-processing. Finished works are produced in a wide range of sizes and on a variety of substrates including canvas, metal, wood, acrylic and fabric. Nat also creates unique mixed media works by hand-embellishing prints on canvas using transparent acrylic, texturing gels, foil transfers and other exotic materials. Throughout the process, each artwork is designed intentionally to enhance and enliven contemporary interiors.
